STEM UP, MD!

The STEM UP, MD! mentorship program provides a comprehensive framework to guide Title I middle school students through the development of their science fair projects. We offer extensive support to both students and educators, including teacher training, a detailed project guide, and hands-on mentorship from local STEM professionals.

In our pilot year, this seven-month program connected 8 students and 2 teachers from a Title I school with 9 dedicated STEM professionals. The results were a testament to the program's impact: all participating students, despite having no prior experience, received awards at the Montgomery County Science Fair. Furthermore, most students reported a significant increase in their interest in pursuing STEM careers, demonstrating the program’s success in fostering future innovators.

It's inspiring to see the incredible work being done to help students from underrepresented communities fall in love with science! STEM UP, MD! is a powerful program designed to do just that, and with your help, we can make an even bigger impact.

The Challenge: A Disappearing Spark

Did you know that while 74% of elementary school students are excited about science, that number drops to just 52% by middle school? This is a critical time when curiosity can either fade or flourish. For students in Title I schools—those serving predominantly low-income families—the challenge is even greater. Data shows that only 17% of these students are proficient in science, a stark contrast to the 45% proficiency rate in non-Title I schools.

These statistics aren't just numbers; they represent untapped potential. A look at the 2024 Montgomery County Science Fair revealed that out of 150 participants, only 3 were from diverse backgrounds, and not a single middle school student was represented. This isn't because of a lack of talent, but a lack of opportunity and support.

The Solution: A Guiding Light

The STEM UP, MD! program, founded by the visionary Dr. Nathalie Fuentes and Dr. Nikisa George, is a direct and logical response to this challenge. It's a targeted, mentor-led initiative that provides middle school students from Title I schools with the tools, knowledge, and one-on-one mentorship they need to succeed in science fairs.

We are not just a science fair program; we're building a foundation for future success. The program's core is the "Science Fair Support Guide," a curriculum that teaches students university-level skills, including:

  • Formulating a hypothesis

  • Conducting statistical analysis

  • Citing sources

With the support of two incredible organizations: Science Montgomery, which provides the official platform of the county science fair, and Linguate Academy, which brings the hands-on, research-focused teaching methods to life. This collaboration creates a powerful, integrated support system that breaks down a complex project into manageable steps. The program is a year-long journey from October to April, with weekly check-ins between students and mentors to ensure they stay on track and feel supported every step of the way.
